Try a New Adventure Sport With a Local Pro on Your Next Trip!
A friend and colleague just sent me this exciting press release on new experiences in traveling - just in time for Start Up Weekend here in Vancouver, not to mention the start of the ski season! Now's the time to get over the trauma of grade school gym class and rediscover the fun in sports - plus it's way cooler. Read all about it here...
Traveling is all about leaving your comfort zone and experiencing new things. A new Vancouver startup company, RideAway, is working on creating an online community for travelers and sport enthusiasts to connect with local experts in the extreme sporting realm to book private lessons, plan trips and rent gear. Within the community platform, riders are able to post videos of their experiences, write reviews of local instructors and develop their passions for sport and travel.
Whether you’re in Australia and want to try surfing with a local legend or in Whistler and are keen to try your hand at skiing for an affordable rate, the group of Vancouverites is working to build a community that enables you to hire someone local that shares your passion. The peer-review based platform resembles an AirBnB-type model that enables local experts to make an income on their free time doing what they love. Co-Founder, Firas Krichi, says “We are making trying new adventure sports easy, accessible and affordable, while creating an opportunity for pros to live for their sport.”
The group of four is just part of over 150 aspiring entrepreneurs participating in the Google for Entrepreneurs’ Startup Weekend Vancouver, a 54-hour global business competition right here in Vancouver, BC. The volunteer-driven Startup Weekend is currently in its 4th year of helping budding entrepreneurs follow their dreams and build companies with the help of many local distinguished entrepreneurs and coaches.
You can keep up-to-date with all of the action by following the weekend's hashtag #SWVan on Twitter. The participants will compete on the evening of Sunday, November 22nd. The winners have the opportunity to compete nationally amongst thousands of the best and brightest entrepreneurs. For more information, check out http://startupweekend.org/ and rideaway.co
